One of the diseases commonly seen among respiratory diseases is asthma or wheezing disease. People of any age can be affected by this disease. Wheezing usually begins in childhood but in many cases it can also start for the first time in adulthood.

The way to completely eliminate asthma is still unknown to medical science. However, there are some simple treatments. With these treatment, you can keep asthma symptoms under control so that, the disease doesn't interfere with your normal life.

The main symptoms are:

  • shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Chest tightness – may feel as if a belt is tight around the chest
  • cough

Symptoms may worsen temporarily. Then it is called an asthma attack.

Other diseases besides asthma may have similar symptoms. Therefore, proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment is very important. If you think you or your child has asthma so you should help from a doctor. Doctors can usually diagnose asthma by listening to the symptoms and doing some simple tests.

Asthma is generally treat with inhalers. An inhaler is a small device that, delivers medicine into the body through inhalation.

Inhalers are mainly of two types. For example:

1. Reliever inhalers: These inhalers are used to quickly relieve asthma symptoms. Its effectiveness lasts for a short period of time.
2. Preventer Inhaler: This inhaler is used daily to prevent asthma symptoms.

Some patients may need to take medication in addition to an inhaler.

What are the causes of asthma?

Asthma is caused by swelling of the airways that bring air to the lungs. The airways become hypersensitive and temporarily narrow.

Certain things can trigger asthma. Some of the most common causes are:

  1. Allergy Such as allergies to animal dander, pollen, dust mites etc
  2. Smoke or environmental pollution
  3. cold wind
  4. physical exercise
  5. Illnesses like colds or viral infections

Identifying these triggers and avoiding them symptoms can be controlled.

How long does asthma last?

Asthma is a long-term disease for many specially those whose disease begins in adulthood. Asthma in children often gets better or improves during adolescence. However, the disease may return later in life.

What are the complications of this disease?

Although asthma can usually be kept under control, remember that it is a complex disease that can cause a variety of problems. It is important to do the following two things:

  • Adherence to regular treatment regimens
  • Do not ignore symptoms if they worsen

Uncontrolled asthma can cause several problems. For example:

  • Always tired
  • Stress, anxiety and depression
  • Lung infection (pneumonia)
  • Delays in child growth or puberty
  • Absence or decreased performance at work or school
  • Disruption of daily activities and leisure due to sudden need to go to the hospital or doctor

In some cases, there is a risk of severe asthma attack which can be fatal.
